As mentioned earlier, the day is a celebration of teachers. But what is the importance of commemorating the birthday of the former president? Dr Radhakrishnan himself was a quintessential teacher, and Buddhist philosopher Nagarjun's sutram in Pali - "shikshanam shrenitam, rida shesham" (teaching is the noblest profession and the rest does not matter) - was considered his motto in life.

A scholar, recipient of Bharat Ratna, first vice president and second president of independent India, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888 to a Telugu family. He had a master's degree in philosophy and a long academic career - teaching at Chennai Presidential College and the University of Calcutta.

He was also vice-chancellor of the University of Andhra Pradesh between 1931 and 1936. He was invited to Oxford to teach Eastern religions and ethics in 1936, a post he held for 16 long years.

It was in 1962, when he assumed the post of President of India, that it was decided that teachers across the country would be honored every year on his birthday. Thus the tradition of celebrating Teachers' Day was put into practice. It is believed that Dr Radhakrishnan considered this a privilege.

On this day, while students remember the former president, they also honor their teachers by participating in many cultural programs. In schools and colleges, students often bring gifts to their favorite teachers and tell them how much they have inspired them.

This year, due to the pandemic, students may only have to meet their teachers virtually. Nonetheless, they can still show affection and seek blessings and guidance from their teachers.
