Teachers' Day is celebrated on September 5 of each year on the anniversary of the birth of India's second President, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Dr. Radhakrishnan believed that "Teachers should be the best minds in the country". When he became India's second president in 1962, his students were eager to celebrate his birthday as "Radhakrishnan Day", but he refused their idea saying, "Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teacher's Day.” Since then, her birthday has been celebrated as Teachers' Day across the country.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, one of Dr Radhakrishnan's closest friends, said: “He has served his country in many ways. But above all, he is a great teacher from whom we have all learned a lot and will continue to learn. It is the special privilege of India to have a great philosopher, a great teacher and a great humanist as its president. That shows the kind of men we honor and respect.

Celebrating Teachers' Day all over the world signifies the importance of teachers in our lives. Teaching is the most convincing job and a great responsibility in this world. Teachers are the source of knowledge who believe in imparting their knowledge to their students which will help them build a better world in the future.

This will lead to a bright and intelligent population, and one who understands the world as it is and is persuaded not by emotions but by logic and facts. Celebrating this day is an honor bestowed upon teachers for their endless contributions to our lives. This day makes them aware of their true worth and importance in our lives as well as in the world.

Dr Radhakrishnan in his book “The Political Thinkers of Modern India” pointed out the importance of teachers and education in a democratic country like India. According to him, teachers play a major role in nation building and for this reason they deserve more respect. He also wrote a book on the Bhagavad Gita in which he called the teacher "One who emphasizes presentation to bring together different streams of thought towards the same end".

Teachers' Day celebrations are one of the best memories of school days in every person's mind. This day is considered an important day in schools and colleges. Teachers' Day is celebrated with fervor and joy in all educational institutions across India. On this day, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the great scholar and academic philosopher is honored because he was born on the same day in 1888.

Students present special cultural programs like dances and skits for their teachers to make them happy and feel special in any way possible. Schools and colleges also run special programs in honor of teachers who engage in thankless work throughout the year. Some schools give awards to teachers on this day. Teachers are encouraged to participate in games with the students.

Students give lectures on Teacher’s Day highlighting the efforts of their teachers and thanking them for their patient listening, encouragement and absolute love. Students disguise themselves as teachers and assume their role by taking lessons. Sometimes teachers also take on the role of students. The scale of the celebrations varies from school to school and college to college depending on how they are run.

Teachers' Day is also celebrated in the United States in the first week of May. UNESCO celebrates World Teachers' Day on October 5 each year as a day dedicated to the appreciation, evaluation and improvement of teachers around the world.
